Fan Review: Lovehammers at The Roxy!

by Joelle96

Before leaping into a review of Lovehammers Roxy show I have one small confession to make: I am a MiG fan. Just had to get that out there so that my lack of extensive Lovehammer knowledge doesn’t shock you in the review.

Last summer I was just sitting around enjoying my summer off and got an email in my box to go to taping of Rockstar INXS. Being the reality show junky and INXS fan that I was, I decided what the hell. I signed up for two tickets and took a friend along to the first taping. Since I have bad luck when it comes to my favorites on reality shows I thought nothing of saying, “I really like Mig and Marty. I am going to keep coming until they are no longer on the show." Needless to say, it was a fun summer.

Since the tapings finished, I have been to see Lovehammers three times. The Highland show with INXS, the Las Vegas show with INXS, and now The Roxy. Each time I go and see them I come away more of a fan. Not just because of their performance style, although it is a big plus, but because of how they treat new fans like me. If you haven’t gone to see Lovehammers in concert, I would highly encourage you to do so as you will not be disappointed.

Right, now on to the review ---yes I do have a tendency to ramble, so I will try and make this to the point.

This is the second concert I have been to at the Roxy. The positives: the stage is small so you know that you are going to get to be up close with whomever you come to see. The negatives: It is very, VERY hot, and I am not talking about the people on stage. If you go there for a concert, dress accordingly.

So I camped out my spot, at the right side of the stage, about two people back right in front of where Billy would be. I knew that Marty would move around a lot so I knew that I should be able to get decent shots of all of them and feel fully involved in the show. MiG did his thing, which I am fully aware didn’t really fit in with the crowd that was there, but I loved him nevertheless.

So finally it is time for Lovehammers, and the Ultrasound intro starts up. I have never been this close to the stage for a Lovehammers show so I was on sensory overload within the first couple of minutes.  I kept looking at Billy, Bobby and Dino and was quite frankly a tad overwhelmed and a little excited.

First up was Straight as an Arrow. I have to say I was impressed as hell with Billy. His guitar playing is just off the charts, in a good way. From the second Marty started singing, I was just pulled into the whole experience and everything became jumbled.

Hold On came next and was followed by Casualty. As I just know the songs from the cds I didn’t know how rare it was for Casualty to be performed now in concert, though I was informed later. I am glad that I was able to experience that in person, now that I know.

Then it was Eyes Can’t See, which was promptly followed by Clinic. A few random comments here: Dino is very dynamic on stage. I had been told that, but it is much easier to notice two rows back than fifty rows back. He was the hardest for me to get shots of for that reason. I never knew where he was going to be.

Then we had my two favorite songs, The Riddle and Rain on the Brain. At some point you just have to put down the camera and enjoy the music and the performances of all the people and this is when I started to do that. I feel bad that I haven’t mentioned Bobby yet, but I feel that I would be redundant saying just how mind blowing he is as a drummer. Sadly, I still have no ability to talk to him as I become mute around him.

Next up The Tunnel, followed by Throw My Head – I just started singing the whole song as I typed those words. There are only so many words to say how spectacular these guys were, and my vocabulary is shot to hell right now. At this point in the concert the boys were all dripping in sweat, as was the audience. Each song was one loud sing-a-long --- which any good concert should be. At one point Marty threw water over all of us and Dino spit water at the people at his end, and it was quite refreshing.

Call of Distress was next and was followed by This Town. This Town is another song that I have heard on cd, but not live, so that was another highlight of the evening for me.

Sadly, after that Lovehammers closed the show with Trees, a song that I normally love, but didn’t enjoy as much this time as I knew it was the end of the show.

It goes without saying that I had an awesome time and enjoyed seeing some old friends at the concerts and making new ones. I can’t wait until they come out to the LA area again and I can enjoy a concert from the Dino side.
